To arrive to this conclusion, the iVerify Network of Fact-Checking Desks has conducted the following process. We contacted the Kuria Community Radio Station, which dismissed the video, asserting that it was not from Kuria and that the language used in the video was not Kuria.
Vincent Mwita, a Migori-based youth anti-FGM activist, was also contacted and provided a clear picture of the incident involving the girl who was rescued after being forced to undergo the cut by her brother. Mr. Mwita also stated that there was no video of the incident and dismissed the viral video that circulated on social media claiming to be from Kuria.
Further investigation revealed in an article published on January 27, 2023 by MSN, a web portal and related collection of Internet services and apps for Windows and mobile devices provided by Microsoft, that the incident occurred in the province of Maniema, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where populations are targeted by attacks carried out by the Mayi-Mayi Malaka militias, which originate in the region, and that the militias reproach women for wearing skirts that are too short.
